Ice Breaker

This position will be responsible for reducing ice that forms on pipes, ceilings, walls, and doorways throughout the plant and warehouses.


  • Must always follow all safety rules and safe work practices.
  • Employee will report to shift supervisor and shift lead for daily tasks/WOs.
  • Employee will break ice and remove in a safe manner that does not create a hazard to ammonia refrigeration equipment, ammonia piping, ammonia piping supports or personnel below your work area, don’t create additional hazards when breaking and removing ice.
  • Employee will inspect areas where ice breaking and removal is in progress for all sources of ice on a defrost pan, defrost drain line, or wall/roof and report the source to shift supervisor or shift lead.
  • Must wear appropriate company provided PPE when working in frozen warehouses, freezer suit, insulated gloves, face wear, and ice gripper shoe attachments.
  • Employee using a scissor lift, boom lift or forklift with a cage MUST make sure safety cones surround you lift equipment.
  • Employee must be aware of his/her surroundings at all times, there will be forklift activity within the shipping department.
  • Employee will work with a “Buddy” at all times.
  • Employee will ensure that all lift equipment is in a safe operating condition before using it, inspect it for any unsafe or non-operating functions and report any deficiencies to the shift supervisor or shift lead before using it.
  •  Must carry a fully charged working two-way radio at all times.
  • Must ensure that lift equipment is removed from frozen work area during breaks and lunch and placed in an area that allows the lift equipment to warm up, do not leave it in the freezer.
  • Employee will at end of ice removal remove all ice on the floor, sweep up, cleanup work area and discard ice to a designated dump area.
  • Employee will at end of day reinspect the lift equipment for damage and operation and inform the shift supervisor or shift lead of any issues found and plug lift equipment in at designated area to charge for next day’s use.
  • Other duties can and will be assigned if no ice breaking activities are scheduled, this can include but are not limited to cleaning/housekeeping of refrigeration /facilities areas, painting, piping insulation, and assisting refrigeration techs with routine tasks. Minor building repairs to freezer wall, ceilings, and insulation.


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Ability to obtain working understanding of a CMMS system. Document work completed, assign time, and assign parts to proper WO.
  • Must work well under pressure and insure safe performance at all times.
  • Must demonstrate a cooperative behavior with co-workers, supervisors, and management.
  • Working knowledge of GMP’s within a food manufacturing facility.
  • Must pass forklift and scissor/boom lift certification test
  • Basic computer navigation CMMS, access procedure folder on network, and E-mail proficiency.
  • Language Skills –Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and managers.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Mathematical and documentation skills necessary.
  • Ability to work with hands in mechanically oriented situations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts if required.
  • Share knowledge, train and support the development of others.
  • Must be trained to use safety harness if required to reach high areas to break ice.
  • Must be able demonstrate safe use of tools such as electric jack hammer, or other tools need to break and remove ice in a safe manner.
  • Must have a good work attendance history and arrive for work on time.

Supervisory Duties: 

  • None

Work Environment:

  • Production Plant and Warehouse environment, will be exposed to very cold temperatures as well as hot.  Temperatures may fluctuate throughout the workday.                      

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to adapt to extreme temperatures both hot and cold temperature range -15°F to 120°F. 
  • Must be able to climb stairs, vertical ladders, and inclined ladders up to 20ft
  • Must not be afraid of heights
  • Must be able to do repetitive movements of bending, reaching up to 24”, overhead and forward up to 24”, squatting, and pushing & pulling an average weight of 40 - 44 lbs.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time on concrete and/or metal grating
  • Requires climbing, standing, squatting or kneeling, crawling, lying on your back, stomach, twisting, bending, neck flexion/extension and cervical rotation, arm, wrist, and hands pronation, and to sustain awkward wrist posture, lifting and other physical movements to perform job
  • Flexibility to work different shifts and days when required
  • Must be able to operate power tools
  • Requires climbing, standing, stooping, twisting, lifting, lifting and other physical movements to perform job
